What do characters' emotions and behaviors reveal about personality and psychological states?
Chris McCandless exhibits unusual behaviors throughout this book. He is not tied to any materialistic type things, and lives with the bare minimum. An example of this is in chapter 1 where Chris spoke to Jim Gallien and gave him his watch, comb, and all his money, this illustrates how he is not attached to the materialistic world. He tells Gallien that he does not want to know what time it is, which shows that on this adventure, he wants to feel completely isolated from the outside modern day world. I think that Chris McCandless is searching for something, he feels that there is more to this world then what there is, there's more meaning to it, he desires to feel enlightened and know the answers.
Another example of Chris McCandless' behavior of living with the bare minimum and traveling around light is in chapter 6 when he became close to Mr. Franz. He explained to Franz that he should sell all his belongings and live on the road. And although Chris McCandless led a lifestyle different than most, Mr. Franz still saw him as an intellectual human being and didn't think less of him. I think that is why they became so close.
Chris McCandless also shows that he has some resentment for his parents, in chapter 7, it shows a letter he wrote to his younger sister about how they don't understand him and after graduation he would take off and never see them or speak to them again. I think this shows that he also feels some sort of social detatchment from the world, almost like he doesn't know how to build complex relationships. I think for some really intelligent people it is also harder for them to build relationships, they feel isolated, or isolate themselves, some see relationships as pointless at times. But I suppose how can you build relationships anyway if you are always on the move and searching for something more?
